Geyser Not Turning On What to Check First

A geyser that won’t turn on at all — no response, no indicator light, nothing — is different from one that’s running but not heating properly, and it usually points to something interrupting power or ignition rather than a deeper mechanical fault. Diagnosing it comes down to checking a handful of specific points in order.

Gas Supply

Confirm the gas supply valve to the geyser is actually open — it’s not unusual for this to get switched off accidentally, especially after any recent work near the unit. If the valve is open but the geyser still won’t ignite, low gas pressure could be the cause, which is worth checking against other gas appliances in the house to see if it’s an isolated or wider issue.

Pilot Light

For geysers with a standing pilot, an unlit pilot means the main burner has nothing to ignite from. Relighting typically involves turning the gas control knob to the pilot position, lighting the pilot with a long match or lighter, and holding the knob down until the flame stays lit on its own — the manufacturer’s instructions on the unit cover the exact sequence for that model. If the pilot won’t stay lit even after relighting, a failed thermocouple — the safety device that detects the pilot flame — is a likely cause, and this is a component best replaced by a technician rather than repeatedly relit.

Ignition System

Many modern gas geysers use electronic ignition rather than a standing pilot. If this system fails, the ignition sequence simply won’t start. Checking the control panel for error codes or warning lights is the first step — the user manual explains what specific codes mean for that model. It’s also worth confirming the unit is actually receiving power, since a blown fuse or tripped breaker can interfere with electronic ignition just as easily as with a fully electric geyser.

Ventilation

Gas appliances depend on proper airflow to operate safely, and insufficient ventilation can prevent the geyser from activating or staying lit at all. Checking that vents and air intakes are free of obstructions, debris, or insect nests — and that the space around the geyser is adequately ventilated generally — rules this out as a cause.

Gas Control Valve

If the gas control valve itself has failed, gas can’t reach the burner regardless of everything else being in order. This is a component that should be replaced by a trained technician rather than something to attempt independently.

Safety Features

Geysers include safety mechanisms like pressure relief valves and high-temperature limit switches, and if one of these has been triggered by an unsafe condition, the unit won’t operate until the underlying issue is resolved — not just reset. Repeatedly resetting a safety cut-off without identifying why it tripped risks masking a more serious problem.

When to Call a Technician

If power and gas supply are both confirmed fine and the geyser still won’t turn on, or if a gas smell is present at any point, that’s the signal to stop troubleshooting and bring in a professional rather than continuing to test the unit.

How to Diagnose a Geyser That Won't Turn On

  1. Check the power source: For electric geysers, confirm the wall switch is on, the plug is seated properly, and the circuit breaker hasn't tripped.
  2. Check the gas supply: For gas geysers, confirm the gas valve is open and that other gas appliances in the house are working normally.
  3. Look for a tripped safety switch: Check for a reset button on the unit, typically related to overheating or pressure protection, and only reset it once the unit has cooled.
  4. Inspect the control panel or dial: Make sure the power/temperature dial hasn't been accidentally turned to off or minimum.
  5. Test with a different outlet (electric models): If possible, try a different power outlet to rule out a faulty socket rather than the geyser itself.
  6. Call a technician if it still won't turn on: A geyser that fails to turn on despite confirmed power/gas supply likely has an internal component fault requiring professional diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my geyser turn on at all?

The most common causes are no power reaching the unit (tripped breaker, unplugged, or a dead switch) for electric models, or no gas reaching the pilot for gas models — start by confirming basic power/gas supply before assuming a component has failed.

My geyser's indicator light is off — does that mean it's broken?

Not necessarily — check the wall switch, circuit breaker, and power outlet first, since a dead indicator light is very often a simple power supply issue rather than an internal fault.

Could a safety cut-off be preventing my geyser from turning on?

Yes — many geysers have a thermal cut-off or pressure safety switch that trips to prevent damage; if this has activated, the unit won't turn on until it's reset (and the underlying cause should be identified before resetting repeatedly).

When should I stop trying to turn it on myself and call a technician?

If you've confirmed power/gas supply is fine and the geyser still won't turn on, or if you smell gas at any point, stop and call a technician rather than continuing to try — repeated attempts without diagnosis risk masking a more serious fault.
