Gas Load Shedding Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad Compared

Last updated: August 29, 2026

There’s no single, unified “Pakistan gas load shedding schedule” — supply is managed by different utilities covering different regions, and each has its own pattern of shortages, infrastructure constraints, and communication about what’s actually happening.

Why Load Shedding Happens at All

At the root of it, gas load shedding is a response to more demand than the network can reliably supply at a given moment. Winter heating needs, industrial and commercial usage, and household consumption all draw on a limited resource, and Pakistan’s gas infrastructure — storage capacity, pipeline capacity, and distribution networks — hasn’t fully kept pace with that demand. Beyond the basic supply-demand gap, routine maintenance and repairs, gas theft and line losses, and financial pressure on the energy sector all factor into how and when load shedding gets applied.

Karachi and the South (SSGC)

In Sindh and Balochistan, SSGC manages supply, and Karachi in particular consumes a disproportionate share of that network’s total gas — over 60%, which makes it the most pressure-affected city in the SSGC service area. Importantly, SSGC has confirmed there’s no fixed, published load-shedding schedule for normal operations, and has specifically flagged social media “schedules” as false. Supply is instead managed in real time based on pressure and demand.

Lahore, Islamabad, and the North (SNGPL)

Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Lahore and Islamabad, fall under SNGPL — a separate company with a separate network. Unlike SSGC, SNGPL has in past winters published seasonal time slots for the December-to-February period. Even so, those slots are a general guide rather than a guarantee, since weather, system pressure, and maintenance work can all shift actual timing.

What Both Networks Have in Common

Regardless of utility, published schedules — where they exist at all — can change with little notice, particularly during winter and Ramadan when demand spikes sharply. The most reliable way to check real status is directly through the relevant utility: SSGC’s updates page for Sindh and Balochistan, or SNGPL’s updates page for Punjab and KPK, rather than relying on schedules circulating through informal channels.

Why Gas Geysers Are Affected More Than Other Appliances

Geysers need sustained gas flow and pressure just to ignite and stay lit, which makes them more sensitive to fluctuations than many other gas appliances. Even a partial pressure drop — well short of a full outage — can be enough to prevent a standard pilot-light geyser from working. This is a common reason households move to an automatic ignition system, though it’s worth being clear about what that solves and what it doesn’t: automatic ignition removes the need to manually relight a pilot after a pressure fluctuation, but if gas supply is fully cut rather than just reduced, a hybrid electric/gas setup is what’s actually needed to keep hot water available during that window.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Sui Gas load-shedding schedule change in Pakistan?

SSGC and SNGPL schedules can change with little notice based on gas supply, weather, and demand, especially during winter and Ramadan, so it's worth checking shortly before you need it rather than relying on a memorized time.

Where can I find the official gas load-shedding schedule for my area?

The official source is your regional gas utility. For Sindh and Balochistan, check SSGC's news and updates page at ssgc.com.pk/web/?page_id=229. For Punjab and KPK, check SNGPL's updates page at sngpl.com.pk/page.jsp?pgids=821. These are updated directly by the utilities and are more reliable than third-party schedule sites.

Does gas load-shedding affect gas geysers more than other appliances?

Yes — geysers need sustained gas flow and pressure to ignite and stay lit, so even partial load-shedding or low pressure can prevent a standard pilot-light geyser from working, which is a common reason households switch to an automatic ignition or hybrid electric/gas system.

Can an automatic ignition system help during gas load-shedding?

An automatic ignition system solves the relighting problem caused by pressure fluctuations, but if gas supply is fully cut, you'd still need a hybrid or electric backup to have hot water during that window.
