Auto ignition kit vs a new hybrid or electric geyser
If your current gas geyser is sound, fitting an auto ignition kit is the smaller, cheaper change: you keep the geyser and it lights itself after load shedding. A new dual gas and electric geyser makes sense when your old geyser is failing or your gas is off for very long periods and you need heat from electricity.
Side by side
| Auto ignition kit on your geyser | New dual gas + electric geyser | New electric geyser | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you buy | A kit | A whole geyser | A whole geyser |
| Installation | Fits existing geyser; no gas line change | Remove old, fit new, gas and wiring | Remove old, fit new, heavy-duty wiring |
| When gas is cut | Relights as soon as gas returns | Element heats on electricity | Not affected by gas |
| When power is cut | No spark without electricity | Gas side works if lit | No hot water |
| Running cost | Sui gas, only when scheduled | Gas, plus electricity when the element runs | Electricity for all heating |
| Best when | Geyser is sound; gas cuts are hours, not days | Geyser is failing; long gas outages | No gas connection |
The cost question
A kit costs a fraction of a new geyser plus installation. Running costs matter too: in Pakistan, heating water with grid electricity usually costs more than with Sui gas, so a dual geyser that relies on its element during long cuts can push up your electricity bill. A gas geyser with auto ignition on a timer heats with gas and only when you need it.
When a new geyser is the better choice
- The tank leaks or is badly corroded.
- Several parts have failed: thermostat, burner and flue together.
- Gas in your area is off for most of the day, every day, and you need hot water during those hours.
- You have no gas connection, or are moving to LPG or solar.
When the kit is the better choice
- The geyser heats properly once lit.
- Your problem is the pilot going out, not the geyser failing.
- Gas returns within hours, even if at awkward times like night.
- The geyser is on a roof or in a shaft and relighting is the real pain.
Frequently asked questions
Is a hybrid geyser better than auto ignition?
Only if you need heating while gas is off. If gas comes back within hours, auto ignition on your existing geyser solves the problem for far less.
Can I add auto ignition to a dual geyser?
If its gas side uses a conventional unitrol-type thermostat, usually yes. Send us a photo to confirm.
