Gas geyser pilot light keeps going out: causes and permanent fixes

A pilot light that keeps going out is almost always caused by one of five things: gas supply cuts, low pressure, wind down the flue, a dirty pilot jet, or a weak thermocouple. The first three come from outside your geyser; the last two are repairs. Working out which one you have tells you the right fix.

1. Gas load shedding

If the pilot is out every time gas supply returns after a cut, the cause is simply that the gas stopped. No repair changes that. The fix is either to relight it each time or to fit automatic ignition, which lights the geyser for you.

2. Low gas pressure

If the pilot dies on cold mornings and evenings while the stove flames also look weak, pressure in your line is dropping below what the pilot needs. Clean the pilot jet so the flame survives lower pressure, use the geyser at better hours, and consider auto ignition to cover the dips.

3. Wind and draughts

Rooftop and balcony geysers are exposed. Strong gusts blowing down the flue can snuff out the pilot. Check the flue cap is fitted and undamaged, close any open burner access panel, and shield the geyser from direct wind without blocking its air supply or flue.

4. A dirty or blocked pilot jet

Dust, spider webs and rust collect in the tiny pilot orifice. The flame becomes small, yellow or lazy and no longer heats the thermocouple properly. A technician can clean the jet and pilot tube; it is a quick job and often fixes a geyser that seemed to have a bigger fault.

5. A weak or misplaced thermocouple

The thermocouple is the copper probe sitting in the pilot flame. If the pilot lights but goes out as soon as you let go of the knob, the thermocouple is probably not generating enough signal, either because it is worn or because it is not sitting in the flame. Replacing it is inexpensive.

Which fix lasts?

Repairs fix causes 3, 4 and 5 permanently. Causes 1 and 2 will keep happening as long as supply is unreliable, which in most of Pakistan means every winter. That is the problem the Autopilot kit was built for: it lights the burner with its own spark whenever gas and pressure return, without depending on the pilot.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my pilot light go out only at night?

Usually because supply is cut or pressure drops overnight in your area. When gas returns, the geyser stays off until it is relit.

Should I replace the geyser if the pilot keeps going out?

Rarely. Most causes are supply problems or cheap repairs. Replace it only if the tank leaks or several major parts have failed.

Will auto ignition fix a faulty thermocouple?

Autopilot does not depend on the pilot or thermocouple: it lights the burner with its own spark and has its own gas controller. Without Autopilot, repair the thermocouple or pilot jet.
