Standing pilot vs auto ignition: where the gas actually goes

A standing pilot is a small flame that burns all the time so the geyser can heat at any moment. On-demand ignition lights the flame only when needed. The pilot itself uses a modest amount of gas; the bigger saving from auto ignition is that you stop running the whole geyser all day.

Two definitions

Standing pilot: a continuous small flame next to the main burner. The thermostat opens gas to the main burner when water cools, and the pilot lights it. Standard on storage geysers in Pakistan.

On-demand (automatic) ignition: no flame is kept waiting; an igniter lights the burner or pilot when heat is needed, or when gas returns after a cut. Standard on instant geysers; added to storage geysers with a kit.

Where gas is really used

  • The main burner heating cold water: by far the largest share.
  • Keeping the tank hot when nobody needs water: the burner keeps firing to replace heat lost through the tank walls and flue, all day and night.
  • The pilot flame itself: small but continuous.

Why households overspend in winter

Because relighting is a chore, many families never switch the geyser off in winter. It heats and reheats the tank for 24 hours to provide hot water needed for perhaps two. Every hour of keeping water hot that nobody uses is gas paid for and wasted.

How auto ignition cuts that

With automatic ignition, switching the geyser off no longer means a trip to the roof to switch it back on. Put the kit on a timer or Wi-Fi switch and the geyser heats only before baths and washing up. How much you save depends on how many hours it used to run and the size of the tank, but the principle is simple: fewer burning hours, less gas.

The slab effect

Domestic gas bills in Pakistan are charged in slabs: the more you use in a month, the higher the rate on your consumption. Cutting winter use can therefore lower the bill by more than the gas saved alone. Check the current tariff for your company on your bill or the regulator’s published rates.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning a geyser off and on use more gas than leaving it on?

No. Reheating a tank once uses less gas than keeping it hot for many hours when nobody needs it.

Does auto ignition remove the pilot?

Autopilot bypasses the pilot function and lights the burner with its own spark, and its programmable socket decides when the geyser runs.
