The gas geyser main burner: flame, cleaning and problems
The main burner sits under the tank and does the actual heating. The thermostat sends gas to it when water cools and the pilot lights it. A clean burner gives an even blue flame; a dirty or damaged one gives yellow, uneven flames, heats slowly and can produce soot and carbon monoxide.
What a good flame looks like
Even, mostly blue, with small soft tips all round the burner. Orange flecks are normal from dust, but large yellow, sooty flames are not.
Signs of a burner problem
- Yellow or lazy flames, soot on the burner area or flue.
- A roaring or lifting flame.
- Slow heating even with good gas pressure.
- Delayed ignition with a small bang when the burner lights.
Causes
- Dust, rust flakes and debris from the tank bottom blocking ports.
- Blocked air openings under or around the geyser.
- Wrong or damaged burner jet.
- Corroded burner from water dripping onto it.
Cleaning and replacement
A technician removes and cleans the burner, clears the jet and air openings, and checks the flue and baffle at the same time. Corroded burners are replaced. Delayed ignition with a bang needs prompt attention.
A clean burner also heats the tank faster, which means fewer burning hours and less gas each day, especially in winter when incoming water is coldest.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my geyser burner make a bang when it lights?
Gas is building up before ignition, often because of a dirty burner or a pilot that is not lighting it promptly. Have it checked.
Is soot from a geyser dangerous?
Soot shows incomplete burning, which can produce carbon monoxide. Get the burner and flue cleaned.
