Gas geyser not heating: causes and fixes
If your gas geyser is not heating, first check whether the pilot is lit. A pilot that is out (usually after load shedding) is the most common cause in Pakistan. If the pilot is lit but the water stays lukewarm, the thermostat setting, sediment in the tank, a dirty burner or low gas pressure are the usual suspects.
Pilot out: no heat at all
Look through the burner window. No flame means the geyser is off. Relight it, and if this happens after every gas cut, consider automatic ignition so it restarts itself.
Pilot lit, but water not hot enough
- Thermostat set too low: turn the temperature dial up a step and wait an hour.
- Low gas pressure: the main burner flame is small and heats slowly at peak times.
- Sediment: silt and scale at the bottom of the tank insulate the water from the flame. Draining the tank flushes it out.
- Dirty burner: a yellow, uneven main flame wastes heat; have it cleaned.
- Too much demand: a small tank runs out quickly in winter when incoming water is very cold.
Main burner never lights
If the pilot is lit but the main burner never fires even when the water is cold, the thermostat may have failed, or the main burner jet may be blocked. Both need a technician.
How long should heating take?
A storage geyser heating a full tank from cold typically takes from around half an hour to more than an hour, depending on its size, burner and how cold the incoming water is. In peak winter with low pressure it can take longer.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my geyser water only warm in winter?
Colder incoming water, lower gas pressure and sediment all reduce output in winter. Raise the thermostat a step and flush the tank.
My geyser was hot yesterday and cold today. Why?
Most often the pilot went out during a gas cut or pressure drop overnight.
