Gas geyser not turning on or not working: what to check
When a gas geyser will not turn on, check in this order: is there gas, are the valves open, does the igniter spark, does the pilot light, and does it stay lit when you release the knob. The step where it fails tells you the cause.
1. Is there gas?
Light a stove burner. If it will not light or burns very weakly, the problem is supply or pressure, not the geyser. Wait for supply or see our low pressure guide.
2. Are the valves open?
Check the gas valve on the pipe to the geyser is fully open. After plumbing work or a long holiday, someone may have closed it.
3. Does the igniter spark?
Press the piezo button and look or listen for a click and spark at the pilot. No spark means a faulty igniter or wire; you can still light with a long lighter while you get it fixed.
4. Does the pilot light?
Hold the knob on Pilot and spark. If gas is present but the pilot will not catch, air may be in the line after a long cut: hold the knob longer. If it still will not light, the pilot jet may be blocked.
5. Does it stay lit?
If the pilot lights but goes out when you release the knob after 30 to 60 seconds, the thermocouple is the usual culprit. If it stays lit but the main burner never fires, suspect the thermostat.
Not working after every load shedding?
If the geyser works fine once relit but is off every time gas returns, nothing is broken: the pilot simply went out with the gas. Automatic ignition fixes that pattern.
Frequently asked questions
Why will my geyser not light after a long gas cut?
Air collects in the line. Hold the pilot knob down longer while sparking until gas reaches the pilot.
Can a geyser not turn on because of a dirty pilot?
Yes. A blocked pilot jet gives no flame or a tiny one that cannot heat the thermocouple.
